What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system developed in the early twentieth century by Joseph Pilates. It is a form of resistance training that promotes strengthening and flexibility and helps create balance in the body. Those who practice Pilates inevitably become stronger, longer, and leaner.

While doing Pilates, you pay attention to your entire musculoskeletal system. You focus your attention on stretching and breathing to strengthen your abdominal core. The “core” or “powerhouse”  (abdomen, lower and upper back, hips, buttocks, inner thighs) is where all Pilates movements begin. From this strong core, movement flows outward to the limbs.
Pilates can be done with or without equipment; in either case, we encourage precise, careful moves for best results. With practice and focus, you will not only look and feel better -- you will strengthen your body.
Proper breathing is an essential part of Pilates. Deep breathing is cleansing and invigorating. While engaged in Pilates, you coordinate your in and out breaths to optimize your movements.
Pilates is truly effective for people of all ages and at all fitness levels. Whether you are an athlete or a couch potato, nine or ninety, Pilates can help you not just gain more control of your body -- it can help you look and feel better in so many ways.
